| World conference on sport, environment to be held in Beijing |

(BEIJING, Oct. 24) -- The 7th World Conference on Sport and Environment will be held in Beijing in October 2007, according to a memorandum of understanding signed in Beijing on Tuesday.
President of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) Liu Qi and President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge signed the MOU on behalf of their respective organizations.
The conference, jointly organized by IOC Sport and Environment Commission and UNEP (United Nations Environment Program), is held once in two years, with the participation of some 500 people from IOC, UNEP, UNDP (United Nations Development Program), WHO (World Health Organization), IPC (International Paralympic Committee), Olympic committees of a number of countries and regions, organizing committees of the Olympic Games, international sport federations, representatives of a number of international enterprises involved in environmental protection businesses and environmental protection organizations.
"Green Olympics" is one of three concepts of the Beijing Olympics, which embodies the Chinese government's people-oriented development strategy aimed at all-round, harmonious and sustainable development. The Beijing Municipality has attached great importance to the task of ecological and environmental protection, by taking measures to control vehicle emissions and promote clean energies. The upcoming conference provides a platform for Beijing to showcase its achievements in this regard.
Present at the signing ceremony were also Liu Jingmin, Beijing vice mayor and BOCOG £å£ø£å £ãutive vice president, and Hein Verbruggen, chairman of IOC Coordination Commission for the 29th Olympic Games. The ceremony was presided over by T.A. Ganda Sithole, director of IOC International Cooperation and Development Department.
